Jenner: banda sérvia concede entrevista inédita ao Bolha Musical
A Jenner é uma banda de thrash metal formada em dezembro de 2013, na cidade de Belgrado, capital da Sérvia (no sudeste europeu). É uma banda formada só por garotas. Apesar de elas estarem tão longe daqui do Brasil, a equipe do Bolha Musical sentiu que elas mereciam uma voz. A vontade do Bolha é que o som delas chegue aos ouvidos dos Brasileiros. Para isso, nosso jornalista musical Rafael Fioravanti foi até elas para entrevistá-las.
Bolha Musical: "To Live is To Suffer" é o primeiro disco de estúdio da banda. O que vocês, garotas, fizeram questão de inserir nas músicas? Jenner: Sim, "To live is to suffer" é nosso primeiro disco e estamos bastante orgulhosas dele. Nós não esperávamos que ele seria tão bem recebido quanto foi enquanto ainda o gravávamos. Todas as causas de sofrimento humano estão inseridas em nossas músicas, tal como doença, julgamento final, ganância, demônios internos, o inevitável, etc. Então nós colocamos tudo isso sob o nome de "To Live is To Suffer". As músicas são baseadas em solos de guitarra melódicos, riffs cativantes e em vocais altos. Toda parte rítmica já é mais sutil, compacta, e por isso as canções não ficaram sobrecarregadas, complexas e muito difíceis de entender. Alexandra, nossa guitarrista e compositora, conseguiu mostrar que o thrash metal pode ser audível e melódico. Ela fez o melhor que pôde durante a composição para deixar tudo certinho (e não aquele negócio chato e sem sentido, com riffs jogados, gritos desconexos e bateria rápida demais). Tudo foi elaborado com harmonia para criar um efeito infinito, assim o pessoal estaria pronto para tocar o disco várias e várias vezes.
Bolha Musical: Como funcionou o processo de composição do disco? Vocês compõem juntas as letras e melodias, ou tudo é um processo individual? Jenner: Alexandra (guitarrista) é a compositora principal da banda. Ela escreveu todas as músicas do disco, fez os arranjos, as melodias vocais, os solos e até as linhas de bateria. Por outro lado, Marija fica encarregada de escrever as letras (seu marido Ivan e Alexandra também participam desse processo). São eles que escrevem as letras juntos. Inclusive, duas letras nesse disco foram escritas por nosso produtor Luka Matkovic. Devido à licença maternidade de Marija e outros projetos pessoais dos membros da banda, a gravação do disco demorou mais tempo que o esperado. Nós já até tínhamos uma gravadora (a Inferno Records, da França), antes mesmo de finalizar o disco! E nós temos que dizer que Selena Simic (que tocou nas bandas Nemesis, Vibrator u rikverc, Goatmare, e The Hellspades) nos ajudou muito no processo de gravação da bateria. O album todo foi gravado, mixado e masterizado por Luka Matkovic no Citadela Sound Production, um estúdio de gravação em Belgrado (estúdio bastante conhecido por trabalhar com outras bandas Sérvias do gênero, como Centurion, Infest, Alitor, Nadimac, The Stone, Kobold, Space Eater, Quasarborn, etc). Outra coisa que precisamos dizer é que nosso disco será prensado em CD (1,000 unidades) e K7 (100 unidades). O lançamento ocorrerá no dia 20 de fevereiro de 2017.
Bolha Musical: Quais são as principais influências da banda? Jenner: Nossas influências são, basicamente, bandas old school de thrash metal, como Anthrax, Exodus, Heathen, Overkill, coisas desse tipo. Nós também temos como influência bandas amigas daqui da Sérvia (como Alitor, Space Eater, Deadly Mosh, etc). Originalmente, a Jenner deveria ser uma banda old school de heavy metal – influenciada por Judas Priest, Grim Reaper e Warlock –, porém, depois de um ano de trabalho duro, a gente optou em mudar nosso estilo e tocar mais rápido, numa pegada mais feroz.
Bolha Musical: E qual a principal conexão do seu primeiro disco com o cenário da Sérvia? Eu não me refiro apenas ao cenário musical, eu me refiro também ao cenário político e cultural. Jenner: A Sérvia é um país bem pequeno aqui na Europa e muita gente nunca ouviu falar dele. Isso, inclusive, acontece com nós, metalheads, aqui da Sérvia. Nós temos muita dificuldade também por parte da nossa mídia, porque nosso estilo musical não é parte da cultura daqui. Por isso foi preciso a gente construir aqui na Sérvia uma comunidade e uma subcultura (que é a nossa cena underground). Outra coisa que temos que destacar é que a política aqui em nosso país é difícil e poucas coisas a respeito dela podem ser encontradas na internet, embora muitas pessoas discordem disso. São poucas coisas que de fato chegam ao público. Somos limitados e eles ainda insistem em falar de liberdade de imprensa por aqui! A política afeta tudo e nós, que somos diferenciadas, acabamos sendo o problema maior. Ano passado, muitos bares onde a gente costumava tocar (e dar rolês) fecharam por aqui. Então a gente tenta lidar com as coisas do nosso jeito, a gente não desiste. Atualmente, somos ajudadas por muitos sites na internet. Eles sempre publicam coisas sobre nosso progresso, sobre os nossos discos e é basicamente assim que as coisas funcionam. Todas informações sobre nós podem ser encontradas apenas na internet.
Bolha Musical: Garotas, como vocês se conheceram e criaram a banda? E desde quando vocês estão envolvidas com o cenário musical Sérvio (ou, mais especificamente, com o cenário musical de Belgrado)? Jenner: As irmãs Marija e Alexandra Stamenkovic começaram na música há cerca de seis anos, quando formaram uma banda de hard rock composta só por garotas. Naquela época, Alexandra ainda era baixista, e depois de dois anos turbulentos com os outros membros da banda (e alguns shows), a banda acabou se separando. Foi só então que a Alexandra veio com a ideia de querer aprender guitarra para formar outra banda. E com muita influência de Marija, essa nova banda acabou se tornando outra banda de hard rock formada só por garotas (só que com novos membros e já com Alexandra na guitarra e vocal). Aí juntou-se a nós Jana Bacic, que foi nossa primeira baixista. Essa deveria ter sido a primeira formação da Jenner, mas depois de pouco tempo, Alexandra percebeu que queria algo a mais. Ela queria uma banda de heavy metal bem old school, com influências de Judas Priest, Grim Reaper, Warlock, Rock Goddess, etc. Na época, ela até queria alguns homens na banda! E pelo fato de não termos uma baterista àquela altura, Marija ofereceu ajuda e juntou-se ao grupo. Aí a banda meio que passou de novo a ser integrada só por garotas. Então veio a vocalista Andjelina Mitic e a baixista Jana Bacic voltou para a banda. Mas como Alexandra queria muito seguir numa linha mais speed metal – até fazendo covers de Overkill, Anthrax, Exodus e Agent Steel –, a Jana Bacic meio que sentiu que não conseguia se encaixar na nova proposta do grupo. Quando ela saiu, a baixista Mina Petrovic entrou no lugar dela. E essa é a nossa formação atual.
Bolha Musical: Falando sobre a cena de metal da Sérvia agora: a cena é forte? Qual a principal dificuldade para as bandas? Jenner: Como dissemos, nosso cenário musical aqui na Sérvia é pequeno, porém forte. Nós temos orgulho de cada banda daqui e algumas delas são até bem sucedidas a ponto de tocar por toda a Europa. Apesar das dificuldades, a gente aguenta firme e uma banda sempre acaba dando suporte para a outra, porque não é nem um pouco fácil lidar com banda. O hobby é caro, e todas nós ainda temos nossos empregos e universidade para ir. Mas no fim, a gente continua aí na cena. A gente gosta muito dessas coisas e isso nos mantem fortes. Apesar de possuirmos boas gravadoras aqui na Sérvia, as bandas por aqui geralmente buscam parceria com selos estrangeiros, pois eles sempre têm interesse em nossa cena musical e, o que é o mais importante, eles nos ajudam a promover o nosso som por todo o mundo.
Bolha Musical: Garotas, vocês ouvem alguma banda Brasileira de metal (ou alguma banda Brasileira de rock n' roll)? Se sim, qual? Jenner: Nós tivemos a honra de abrir um show para uma banda Brasileira de metal, formada só por garotas, chamada Nervosa. O show aconteceu aqui em Belgrado, no dia 23 de junho de 2016. Elas são incríveis e a gente espera poder tocar junto com elas (e dar uns rolês) num futuro próximo.
Bolha Musical: Com o lançamento do primeiro disco de vocês, o "To Live is to Suffer", qual o maior orgulho da banda até agora? Jenner: Nós estamos bastante orgulhosas de termos entrado no famoso festival Sérvio de Zajecar. Este festival existe já há mais de 50 anos e nós estamos felizes de termos feito parte da competição de bandas. Nós tocamos nossas músicas para eles no festival e nossa música fori bem recebida. A gente conseguiu ter uma performance marcante, o que serviu para nos abrir portas para um sucesso ainda maior. Apesar de termos chegado apenas à semifinal, passamos por momentos maravilhosos e voltamos satisfeitas para casa. Foi uma honra tocar num festival assim tão grande aqui na Sérvia.
Bolha Musical: Ainda falando sobre o lançamento desse primeiro disco, vocês pensam em alguma turnê futuramente (não apenas uma turnê internacional, mas também uma turnê nacional ou até local)? Jenner: Atualmente não temos disponibilidade para fazer uma turnê grande, mas daremos o nosso melhor para fazer alguns shows já nos próximos meses. Nós começaremos aqui na Sérvia e pela península balcânica, mas não iremos excluir a possibilidade de estendermos uma turnê para outras regiões daqui da Europa dentro de alguns anos.

Interview with Jenner, the serbian thrash metal band
Jenner is a thrash metal band formed in december 2013, in Belgrade, capital and largest city of Serbia (european south east). It's an all-female band. Even though they're so far away from here in Brazil, the Bolha Musical's team felt that they deserved to be heard, they deserved a voice here in our big country. Our desire is that Jenner's music reaches Brazilian's ears. For this, our music journalist Rafael Fioravanti went to them and did this interview.
Bolha Musical: This is the first Jenner's full length album. What feelings did you, girls, strive to insert in the songs? Jenner: Yes, "To live is to suffer" is our first full length album and we're very proud of it. We didn't hope that this album would be accepted as good as it were before recording it. All motives of human sufferings runs through our songs, like illnesses, judgement day, greed, inner demons and death, the unavoidable, etc. So we integrated it all under the name of "To Live is To Suffer". The songs are based on melodic guitar solos, catchy riffs and high pitched vocals also. The rhythm section is subtle, compact and that's why the songs aren't overloaded, complex and difficult for the comprehension. Alexandra, our guitarist and composer, has shown that thrash metal can be very listenable and melodic. She gives her best during the composing in order to really get it right, not just as simple as adding riffs, senseless yelling and playing drums as fast as we can. All these elements must be ordered in harmony to create the effect of a non-stop thing, so the audience will be able to repeat the whole album over and over again.
Bolha Musical: How worked the process of composition for the album? All you, girls, write the songs and the lyrics together or is it an individual process? Jenner: Alexandra (guitarist) is the main composer in the band. She wrote every song on the album, did all the arrangements, the singing melodies, the solos and drums parts by herself. On the other hand, Marija is in charge to write the lyrics (her husband Ivan and Alexandra participate in it) and they all wrote some lyrics together. Two lyrics on the album were written by our producer Luka Matkovic. Due to Marija's maternity leave and other band member's private stuff, it took a little longer that we planned to record the album. We already had found a label (Inferno Records from France), even when the album was not finished yet! And we must say that Selena Simic (Nemesis, Vibrator u rikverc, Goatmare and The Hellspades) helped us a lot with drums tracks. The whole album were recorded, mixed and mastered by Luka Matkovic at the Citadela Sound Production, a recording studio from Belgrade (known for its work with many Serbian bands, like Centurion, Infest, Alitor, Nadimac, The Stone, Kobold, Space Eater, Quasarborn etc). We also must say that our album will be printed both on CD (1,000 pieces) and cassettes (100 pieces) and will be released on February 20th, 2017.
Bolha Musical: What are the band's major influences? Jenner: Our influences mostly are old school speed and thrash metal bands, like Anthrax, Exodus, Heathen, Overkill, etc. And we also have as influence some Serbian friends (from bands like Alitor, Space Eater, Deadly Mosh, etc). Originally, we were supposed to be an old school heavy metal band, influenced by Judas Priest, Grim Reaper and Warlock, but after a year of hard work, we decided to change our style and play more ferociously and faster.
Bolha Musical: What is the main connection of your first album with Serbia's scene? I'm not just talking about the musical scene, but also about the political scene and cultural scene. Jenner: Serbia is a small country for which much of the world in general haven't heard of. This happens to us, metalheads, in Serbia. We've got a lot of difficulties coming from the media, because our genre is not part of the culture. But on the other side, we have a built community and subculture, which is our underground scene here in Serbia. Politics in our country is a bit hard and some things here just can't be found on the media, only certain things are served to people in general and that's it (while many people here think it's not so). We are limited and then they even talk about media freedom. Politics affects almost everything and we, the different ones, are in the major problem. Last year, many clubs we used to play and hang out were closed. But we manage to it our way, we don't give up. We're been supported by many internet sites. They always publish things about our progress, about our album, and that's basically that. All informations about us can only be found on the Internet.
Bolha Musical: Girls, how did you meet each other and created the band? And for how long are you acting in Serbia's musical scene (or, more specifically, Belgrado's musical scene)? Jenner: Sisters Marija and Alexandra Stamenkovic started their music career six years ago, by forming an all-girl hard rock band. Alexandra was bassist back then, and after two stormy years with others members (and few gigs), they disbanded. So Alexandra came with the idea of learning guitar and then formed another band. Under Marija's influence, it became another all-girl hard rock band... but with different members and with Alexandra on guitar and vocals. Then we found our first bassist Jana Bacic. This was supposed to be the first Jenner's line-up, but a few time later, Alexandra realized she wanted something more. She wanted an old school heavy metal band with influences of Judas Priest, Grim Reaper, Warlock, Rock Goddess, etc, and she also wanted some male members with her. Since she had no drummer, Marija offered her some help and they started again that all-girl band thing. So singer Andjelina Mitic and bassist Jana Bacic showed up. After a year of hard work, we accepted Alexandra's influence of being an old school speed metal band, starting to cover acts like Overkill, Anthrax, Exodus, and Agent Steel. Later on, Jana unfortunately felt that she couldn't fit in anymore, so she was replaced by bassist Mina Petrovic. That's our current line-up.
Bolha Musical: Talking now about Serbia's metal scene: is it strong? What's the main difficulty for the bands? Jenner: As we've already said, our scene in Serbia is small, but quite strong. We're proud of every band we have with us and some of them are successful and plays all across the Europe. But we must hold and support each other tight, because it's not easy for each one of us to deal with a band. It's a very expensive hobby and we all have our jobs and university to go. But in the end, we're all making it, because that’s what we love, and that what keeps us standing still. Although Serbia has hardworking labels, our bands here in Serbia usually seek cooperation with foreign labels, because they've got interest in our scene and, most important, they help us to promote our music across the world.
Bolha Musical: Do you girls listen to any Brazilian metal band (or any Brazilian rock band)? If so, which one? Jenner: We had the honor to play opening act for Brazilian all female thrash metal band Nervosa, here in Belgrade. It was June 23rd, 2016. They are awesome and we hope we'll play together again (and hang out) in a near future.
Bolha Musical: With the release of your first album, "To Live is to Suffer", what's the biggest pride of the band? Jenner: We're proud of our first entrance to famous Serbia's guitar festival in Zajecar. It exists for 50 years already and we're very happy to be part of it in a competition for demo bands. We played our songs to them, it were very well accepted by the audience, and we did a very remarkable performance that opened us the door of the further success. Even we did it only to the semi-finals, we had a great time and we came home satisfied. It was an honor to perform at such a great festival here in Serbia.
Bolha Musical: Also with the release of this first album, does the band think about a possible tour (not just an international tour, but also a national or a local tour)? Jenner: Currently we're not able to organize big tours, but we will give our best to play a few gigs every month. We'll start with Serbia and Balkans, but we don't exclude the possibility to extend it to the other parts of Europe in a few years.
